Call for action after forestry worker death

Date of Release:
Tuesday, December 20, 2011

A forestry union is calling for action following the death of a Marlborough forestry worker.

A Coroner's report into the death of Sean Mortensen has revealed a bleak picture of health and safety in the forestry industry.

The Coroner pointed to shortcomings, including a lack of risk management training and formal hazard training.

The general secretary of First Union, Robert Reid, says on average, five forestry workers per year are killed on the job.

Mr Reid says the Department of Labour launched an action plan in September, but hasn't included the union as a key stakeholder.
