FIRST Union is playing its part in a nationwide campaign to force a referendum on asset sales. FIRST Union and the CTU are part of a Keep Our Assets coalition which aims to get 10% of voters to sign a petition calling for a referendum. The referendum would ask “Do you support the Government selling up to 49% of Meridian Energy, Mighty River Power, Genesis Power, Solid Energy and Air New Zealand?”
As well as unions, the Keep Our Assets campaign is supported by organisations as diverse as Grey Power and the New Zealand Union of Students Associations. It is also backed by political parties – with Labour, the Green Party, New Zealand First and Mana all in support.
FIRST will be working with delegates to make sure all members and non-members have the opportunity to sign the petition, and to help protect New Zealand’s assets for future generations.
